May God bless you this day…to find love! Each person on this planet has experienced or will experience the depths of a despair called loneliness.Knowing that doesn’t really help, does it? Loneliness brings isolation, sometimes self-imposed, sometimes not, but it can be overwhelming to the point of destroying hopes and dreams. So, as someone struggles with this terrible situation, why are these words often the only help offered? I want more. Each week people tell me of their intense loneliness. A friend has betrayed them or they find themselves ignored, put down, and alone. Often they are suffering in horrible marriages, dealing with separations, or trying to find life after divorce. And there are those who want to be married even just once.In every situation, they long for love, trust, caring, a close relationship, someone they can count on. What they don’t want is...to be used, to be wanted only until something better comes along, to be important just because of what someone else can get out of them, to find their relationship exists only when the other person decides to come by or needs something or is bored. We all go through times of loneliness, but there are many who are going to much greater depths than the rest. I can feel it in the words they send. I can see it in the stories they tell. They search for answers and find nothing but despair. And I feel deeply for them, because at this time in their lives they are touching, even briefly, the eternal existence of life without God, though many do not realize it. Lost in sadness, frustration and anger, they can’t see that in their loneliness also lies the secret to the path out.In the movie The Matrix, Morpheus tries to get Neo to understand that what seems to be reality is not reality at all. The truth is much more than what he thinks he sees. Neo believes Morpheus is speaking only of staying alive and sarcastically asks if he’s trying to say that Neo can dodge bullets. Morpheus smiles and says, “No, Neo. I’m trying to tell you that when you’re ready, you won’t have to.”That line is a turning point in the movie because it reveals a different focus for the young Neo. In the same way, for any of us to deal with loneliness and the despair and hopelessness it brings, there must also be a turning point that reveals a different focus for us. And there is.But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33We usually see this passage in lessons about worrying. But it has much more to say, and that is simply this: In everything, God comes first. He will take care of us, but He must be first in our lives. He wants us to love Him and He wants our love for Him to be most important thing to us. Jesus said, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30) This means He is to become our focus. And why would He want that?Because in every situation, He longs for love, trust, caring, a close relationship, someone He can count on. What He doesn’t want is...to be used, to be wanted only until something better comes along, to be important just because of what we can get out of Him, to see a relationship only when we decide to come by or need something or are bored. We cry out to God for someone to love us and He replies, Here I am! But we never hear His voice, or see His hand, or feel the warmth of His embrace. We leave Him alone as we search for something better. There have been times in my life when my focus was on friendship with a person instead of with Jesus, when I worshiped my marriage instead of Christ, when I went to God only for what I could get from Him. What I have learned is that by loving Him first, everything else...my friendships, marriage, relationship with my kids...they all fall into the right priority and are made better…because He loves me.Am I trying to tell you that you’ll be able to find meaning for your life through a friend, a lover, a child, or a spouse? No. I’m trying to tell you that when you truly love God, you won’t have to.Take care and be God’s,Chuck
